With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to our beloved David, who departed from this world on May 18th, 2024, at the home of his long-time friend, Brad Besse. He was 68 years old.

David Duane Thackwell was born on November 15, 1955, in Geneva, Ohio to Curly & Jane Thackwell. Throughout his life, he was a source of love, strength, and wisdom to his family and anyone who crossed his path. He will forever be remembered for his unwavering kindness and generosity, witty banter, and wanting to make others feel special.

Family both related and chosen meant everything to David, and he poured his heart and soul into supporting his loved ones.  His home was a place where the smells of delicious cakes and other decadent desserts were often enjoyed. Cocktails were shared and the sounds of his favorite music could be heard. Whether it was through a delicious homemade meal, a listening ear, or heartfelt advice, he touched the lives of countless individuals and left a mark on their hearts. He had an unparalleled ability to make everyone he loved feel cherished and valued.

In addition to being a devoted brother, cousin, uncle and great-uncle, David was a cherished friend, confidante, and mentor. His wisdom, generosity, and compassion knew no bounds, he enriched the lives of those around him in countless ways.

One of his greatest passions in life was cooking and sharing meals and desserts. His loved ones would sit and gather with him for hours while enjoying a special creation of his. He spent many an hour baking the world’s best desserts. Cheesecakes were his specialty.

When he wasn’t cooking, he would enjoy looking for special recipes, planning parties and events, and most notably, decorating City Hall for Christmas.

David had a zest for life that was truly inspiring. Despite facing some health challenges, he approached each day with resilience and determination, refusing to let adversity dim his light. He was not going to allow them to get him down, often continuing to put others before himself.

David was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Janeen Makurat, his nieces Kari Sloan & Amy Lawrence, his cousin & friend   Beth Ann Smith, many other cousins,  many great and great-great nieces & nephews, as well as his beloved dog, Dior.

David’s love, generosity, and wit will be deeply missed, however it will continue to inspire us all in the days and years to come. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that he was deeply loved and will never be forgotten.

A celebration of life will take place at a date to be determined.
